Exercise physiologists are university-qualified allied health professionals who specialise in prescribing exercise for people with chronic health conditions, injuries, and disabilities.
Unlike personal trainers (who work with generally healthy populations), exercise physiologists have clinical training to:
– Assess movement, function, and physical capacity
– Understand how disability and chronic conditions affect the body
– Design safe, effective exercise programs for complex medical conditions
– Modify exercises for different abilities and needs
– Monitor progress and adjust programs based on clinical outcomes
– Work collaboratively with other health professionals
Exercise physiology is evidence-based, meaning programs are grounded in research about what works to improve health, function, and wellbeing.
– Building strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination
– Improving functional capacity for daily activities
– Managing chronic conditions (diabetes, heart disease, arthritis etc.)
– Reducing pain and improving mobility
– Supporting rehabilitation from injury or surgery
– Enhancing mental health and wellbeing
– Increasing confidence in physical abilities
– Preventing falls and improving safety
– Promoting healthy lifestyle habits
– Supporting weight management and metabolic health
